Wichita State University has hinted that additional parking options were in the works for the upcoming school year. Now, the university has made that a reality.

University leaders have finalized an agreement with Extra Space Management Inc. to lease parking lot space at the southeast corner of 21st Street North and Oliver. The lot is in front of Extra Space Storage, a self-storage facility where the parking lot there is largely unused.

The contract, brokered by Marlin Penner of John T. Arnold Associates, is effective Monday and runs through 2016.

The lease gives Wichita State access to an additional 240 spaces.

The university has worked to implement more parking options after the lot south of Cessna Stadium was taken out of commission so Shocker Hall, a student-housing facility, could be constructed.

Last August, WSU implemented a shuttle bus service which allows students and faculty to park at the university’s Eugene M. Hughes Metropolitan Complex near 29th Street North and Oliver.

The shuttle service will also be available for the new lot at 21st and Oliver, a site that is a half-mile away from the university’s main campus.

However, WSU is requiring (… permits for those who park on campus.

The permit requirement also starts Monday.
