The former IRS building in downtown Wichita will soon have a new owner.

Sedgwick County Commissioners voted on Wednesday to purchase the 92,372-square-foot building at 271 W. Third Street, near the corner of Third and Wichita streets.

Commissioners voted 3-2 to move forward with the purchase. Commissioners Karl Peterjohn and Richard Ranzau voted against the purchase.

The county is buying the building for $5 million and plans to spend roughly another $9 million to renovate the site.

The county plans to fund the purchase with a general obligation bond that will be sold next year.

The building will be used to house the county’s main tag office, a new home for the existing tag office at 200 W. Murdock.

The former IRS building also will house other departments, including the Metropolitan Area Building and Construction Department, the Metropolitan Area Planning Department and the appraiser’s office. The site also will house some of the back-office functions of the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Department
